It is very tough dealing with an injury, particularly when you are an athlete who strives to do his or her very best at all times when competing. After decades of this stuff, I can tell you that forced rest, alternative forms of exercise to maintain fitness and reading good novels are things that have brought me back! Patience, my friend. We do SO much for our kids - and they're most definitely deserving of our full commitment. But as you point out its important to remember you still have a life beyond being mom/dad. Excellent piece! As a 61-year-old athlete who still worries about how I do in my age group, I find it mandatory to take complete days off now just to enable my body to be at full strength when it counts. Add a few injuries to the mix, and the recovery/rationed training takes you into a frustration zone you never anticipated, especially when you're older. Be smart, use common sense. Your advice is right on target.Bob Richardshttp://www.chicagoruntimes.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3054700907127243813.post-303490796122802832010-02-14T19:51:49.268-06:002010-02-14T19:51:49.268-06:00Absolutely! But it seems to me that, even though the tri-specific fitness gained from XC skiing isn't as great as it would be if I spent the same amount of time swimming/biking/running, the fact that I could simply spend more time skiing (compared to trainer rides/cold weather runs) would give me greater fitness in the end?

St. George is a wussy Ironman for wussies. For a true test of skill and endurance, there is no more difficult race than Ironman Florida.
